 First Generation

1. George PILKINGTON, son of George William PILKINGTON of Urney, Westmeath, Ireland ( - ), was born on 25 March 1785 in Dublin, Ireland.  He was a Captain of Royal Engineers/Civil engineer and surveyor-general of Trinidad.  A Colonial Civil Engineer at the Cape (1848-58), Pilkington was born in Dublin and educated at Trinity College, Dublin. He obtained a commission in the Royal Engineers in 1804, attaining the rank of Captain. He left the service in 1814 after he had brought a superior officer to a court martial on a charge of speculation which he proved. Pilkington then became Chief Civil Engineer on the West Coast of Africa in 1817, but left in 1819 for health reasons. He spent some time in Trinidad and joined the Governor's Staff in 1821, he was appointed Chief Engineer by the Governor in 1828, which appointment was unconfirmed and he left for England. 'He was strongly religious and opposed all warfare for many years he was an itinerant preacher for the anti-slavery movement, universal peace and evangelical Christianity, but does not seem to have belonged to any church. He followed this calling for seven years before resuming his profession, serving with the Central of Spain (sic) Railways' (A&B Jul 1918:429). In 1848 he came to the Cape where he replaced CC MICHELL in the post of Colonial Civil Engineer. About 1855 he submitted designs for the Parliament Buildings, Cape Town. He surveyed Bain's Kloof Road, on which Pilkington Bridge is named after him. He surveyed the route over Du Toit's Pass in 1858 (Du Toitskloof). The road was built much later. He remained in Cape Town, dying there in 1858.    (A&B Jul 1918:429-34; Webb 1985; Langham-Carter MS UCT; Picton-Seymour 1977; Schoeman 1982).  George married Charlotte Clara Jollie on 5 November 1816 in St George, Hanover Square, Middx, England.  He died on 3 July 1858 in Green Point, Cape Colony.

Despite being an itinerant preacher for the anti-slave movement, ironically, George and Charlotte owned 14 slaves [African and Creole] in Trinidad as per the Slave Registry for 1822 and 1825 [courtesy of Ancestry.com].  There is also a record that Charlotte sold one of her slaves in 1828 to another Master.

Historical information regarding George William Pilkington

He went to Cape Town in 1850, about two years after his father's arrival in the city. Pilkington seems to have been employed as a builder and contractor. About 1854 Pilkington & McDonald were listed as Building Contractors and Merchants in Castle St, Cape Town. By January 1857 they were also recorded as Timber Merchants. In the capacity of Builder, Pilkington was responsible for the Castle Causeway on the foreshore, the Customs House and the Standard Bank, Cape Town. He may have been the Pilkington who won second premium in the competition for the Maritzburg Collegiate Institute in 1861, 'with his Pre-Raphaelite drawing'
