3. Robert MORIN , son of Thomas MORAN and Elizabeth Ann WILSON, was born in 1861 in ?Desertmartin, Co.Derry, Ireland. He was a Chemical Work Labourer/Soap Boiler. 4. George MORIN , son of Thomas MORAN and Elizabeth Ann WILSON, was born in 1867 in Desertmartin, Co.Derry, Ireland. He was a Policeman with the City of Glasgow police in 1887. On his retirement from the Police force, he worked as a Soap Works Machineman.
George first married Sarah Kernohan on 2nd July 1894 at 34 Abbotsford Place, Glasgow according to the Banns of the Church of Scotland. Sarah was the daughter of Henry Kernohan, a Master Draper and Mary Kernohan, ms Walker. Sadly Sarah died just a few months after their marriage, on 6 Dec 1894 at 57 John Knox St., Glasgow. Her cause of death was Uraemia.
George then declared his marriage to
Jane CRUICKSHANK
on 17 January 1914 in 19 Howard Street, Glasgow, by a "warrant of the
Sheriff Substitute" - i.e. an irregular marriage which was unique to Scotland.
The census shows us that he had been living with Jane as man and wife at least
since 1901.
Historically when Scotland became a Protestant nation for various reasons the
Church of Scotland was the Established church and anyone marrying outside this
was considered to have embarked on an 'irregular' marriage.
George died on 1 June 1938 in Victoria Infirmary Glasgow - Myocardial Degeneration. He was buried in Glasgow.
Jane CRUICKSHANK , daughter of George Andrew CRUICKSHANK (1836-aft1871) and Margaret GREIG (1840-1883), was born on 13 May 1870 in 15 Old Market Place, Banff.
